After what was a bit of a crazy season, full of roster changes and other ups and downs, the Mentality Esports CS:GO team found themselves in the ESEA Advanced playoffs. On Monday, July 31st, they took on Vault in round one of the playoffs.
Vault is a team featuring three Columbian players and two North American players. This team was deemed better than Mentality, the odds were stacked against Mentality, quite literally, as only 20% of people thought they’d win.
The best of three series was set to begin, the maps selected were Inferno, Cache and Mirage.
Entering Inferno, Mentality started on the Counter Terrorist side, and Vault started on the Terrorist side. Vault won the initial 3 rounds, and looked quite comfortable to start this map off. Then, Mentality started finding their groove on the CT side, constantly punishing all of Vault’s Mistimed utility usage, and other mistakes. Mentality took the half, 9-6. Mentality then won the pistol round and dominated the entire T side, only letting Vault win two rounds. Mentality won map one to go up 1-0 in the series.
Stats after map one for Mentality:
DaneJoris – 27 – 11 – 100ADR
BASE – 20 – 13 – 100ADR
DVeeN – 20 – 12 – 75ADR
NiSMO – 15 – 19 – 75ADR
w0w – 11 – 16 – 50ADR
Following the win on Inferno, Mentality entered Cache, a very Counter Terrorist sided map.
Vault went into the map very hot and lethal, seeming like they wanted revenge after that first map. Vault start off 8-0 on the T side. Mentality just could not handle the brute force that Vault was dishing out. Mentality finally grabbed a couple of rounds, and finished the half 5-10. But the relentless aggression from Vault proved to be too much, as they won 6 consecutive rounds, and took Cache 16-5
Stats after map two for Mentality:
DaneJoris – 14 – 14 – 80ADR
BASE 18 – 16 – 80ADR
NiSMO – 9 – 17 – 70ADR
DVeeN – 12 – 18 – 50ADR
w0w – 6 – 16 – 30ADR
With the series tied, and everything on the line, these 2 teams went to Mirage, a very basic map for any team to play on.
Once again, the match started with Vault on the Terrorist side and Mentality on the Counter Terrorist side, Vault won their Terrorist side 10-5. Mentality began to fight back when they switched to Terrorist side, winning a lot of rounds and playing off each other like a true team, BASE stepped up a lot on Mirage, as well as DaneJoris. Mentality fought back in the second half, winning twice as many rounds as they did in the first. Allowing them to get to 14-15. They ended up losing the last round needed to take the game to overtime, ending their season in heartbreaking fashion.
Stats after map three for Mentality:
BASE – 26 – 18 – 80ADR
DaneJoris – 19 – 19 – 80ADR
DVeeN - 18 – 18 – 50ADR
NiSMO – 15 – 20 – 60ADR
w0w – 16 – 22 - 50ADR
Mentality lost the series 2-1 vs Vault in the first round of ESEA Advanced playoffs.
We saw Mentality struggle on the Counter Terrorist side, as well as with their utility usage and site-holding. But on the other hand, we saw them really excel on the Terrorist side, as well as being dominant in terms of site retakes and forcing their way onto a bombsite. Hopefully they can work on what they had trouble with, and bounce back next season.
